Edict Ceremony and Burning of Ishalem
2025-01-05 · 2h
“The party entered Ishalem to find the docks overflowing—ships lashed in long chains out into the harbor, pilgrims crossing decks to reach the streets. The harbormasters had abandoned order; every vessel arriving was simply tethered to another. The streets inside the gates were just as crowded. Prester Fennan advised caution in the Urecari districts, unknown streets to most Tierrans. Ciarlo and Adrea asked to accompany the party, Ciarlo noting that a larger group would make it easier for him to move through the crowds with his limp. The city’s narrow, overhung streets were stifling in the heat. Merchants hawked everything from commemorative Arkship models to genuine Edict copies—many stalls already picked clean. One heavyset candle-seller, Direc na-Taya, offered ornate blue Aidenist candles, claiming they would light the city that night. The group ended walking around before resting at an Urecari Inn. With noon approaching, the main thoroughfares were jammed with pilgrims pressing toward Arkship Hill. Knowing Ciarlo couldn’t push through the crush, the party took an alley between the Tierran and Uraban districts—an unclaimed no-man’s-land. There they encountered a beggar in faded red rags, who accepted coins from an Uraban merchant and then, in flawless Tierran, remarked: At the alley’s end, the Arkship’s prow dominated the view. To the left, a grand Urecari church balcony hosted Ur-Sikara Lukai, who presented a golden amulet said to have belonged to Urec himself, gifted by Soldan-Shah Imir to the church. The crowd cheered. To the right, bells rang from the Aidenist Kirk as King Korastine emerged with Princess Anjine, leading a Tierran procession. The Arkship’s weathered ribs and single broken mast stood atop the ceremonial hill. Ropes and a golden railing framed the bow altar. Leaders from both nations ascended. King Korastine and Prester-Marshall Baine on the Tierran side, bearing the Edict. Soldan-Shah Imir and Ur-Sikara Lukai on the Uraban side, with their own copy. The Edict’s text was read aloud in both tongues, declaring the world split at Ishalem’s meridian—north to Tierra, south to Uraba—in the names of Aiden and Urec. Each ruler sealed the agreement with a cut palm, pressing their blood into the Arkship’s wood. Prayers followed, and the leaders turned to their respective crowds, calling for celebration. The crowds began to mingle across cultural lines for the first time in living memory. Merchants crossed the district divide. Worships were planned on both sides for the evening. An Uraban man in an olba shared sweet wine with the party. In that moment, they noticed the beggar from the alley was gone, his Cuars left in the alley. Intrigued but undetered, they ventured into the celebrations until night fall. During the festivities following the Edict signing, the party stumbles upon the same candle merchant from earlier. Without warning, his shop violently explodes, triggering a fast-moving inferno that consumes nearby stalls and buildings. As the fire spreads toward the Urecari Prime Church, chaos erupts. Accusations fly—many blame the Aidenists for the blaze. Struggling through smoke and flame, the party escapes toward the main promenade, where they encounter King Korastine and his children, Anjine and Mateo, organizing a bucket brigade. Before long, Uraban cavalry attack Tierran civilians. The party defends the king and joins his retreat, seeking shelter in a stone warehouse. As tensions rise and options narrow, Prester Marshal Baine and Aidenist paladins arrive, guiding the group toward the docks. Separated from the escort, the party leads the king and his children through alleys and firestorms, narrowly evading ambushes and traps. They reach the royal cog just in time. Korastine orders refugees aboard until the ship reaches capacity, then gives the order to sever the gangplank. As they sail away, the Arkship burns on the hill, and Ishalem falls behind them in ash and ruin.”
